Portrait pictures: the basic

There are many types of portrait pictures when it comes to doing a photoshoot. You can get creative and do whatever you want! The types of pictures I usually capture with my model are:

  • The basic

  • The fairylights

  • The prism

  • The floral

As you can tell by the title of the blog, I’ll be talking about the basic types of pictures. The basic types of pictures are those pictures that are easy to capture. They’re the ones that don’t have props but just a model.

Where is the best place to take pictures?

Honestly, the best place to take these types of pictures are usually outside. The lighting is always perfect and it’ll be all natural. You don’t necessarily have to go somewhere extravagant to take pictures. You can simply go to the backyard, front yard, or a nearby playground. I recently did a photoshoot with a friend of mines and I used her front yard and backyard for the shoot.

When is the best time to take pictures?

The best time is usually around the evening time. The sun is at the perfect spot for any type of pictures. You can just move around and take the pictures at different angles to get the perfect photo. Evening time is usually the best because the sun isn’t piercing bright and it’s slowly setting.

Setting and lens to use

When taking pictures outside, you have to be aware of your setting. You can choose your ISO to be around 100 - 500. When in a very bright setting, I prefer the ISO to be either 100 or 200. Using the manual mode on the camera is really tricky. I suggest just mess around with the f-stop until you’re satisfied with the outcome.

TIP: If you feel like fiddling with the f-stop on the manual mode, then I suggest you use the P (programmed auto) mode.

When it comes to lens, my favorite ones to use are the 18-55mm, which is considered the default lens, and the 50mm. The 18-55mm is best if there are a lot of things you want to capture. The 50mm is best if you want the lens to focus on just one thing at a time. The 50mm lens makes focusing on one thing easy. It’ll focus on the model and have the entire background blurred. The 18-55mm will obviously do the same but it won’t blur the background as much as the 50mm.

The model

When it comes to how you want the picture to look like it entirely up to you. There are various amount of poses to choose from. My favorite types of poses are the candid-like ones, the serious look, and the smile. If you’re stuck on what poses to do, you can just look some online. Some people ask me about the style the model should have. When it comes to outdoor pictures, I usually like to go for something that’s neutral or soft. I don’t really go for dark or very bright colors.

Outdoor pictures, or the basic as I like to call it, are probably one of the easiest ones to capture. They don’t consist a lot of editing and fancy equipment. As I mentioned earlier, you can take pictures in the comfort of your home.
